A man suspected of fatally shooting a 48-year-old in a Camarillo neighborhood was found dead inside his vehicle near Los Angeles International Airport after a high-speed pursuit that reached roughly 100 mph across multiple freeways, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office confirmed. The suspect died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on a freeway ramp in Westchester, ending a chase that spanned two counties and put countless drivers in danger.
Fatal shooting in a Camarillo neighborhood
Deputies with the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire in a Camarillo neighborhood and found an adult man suffering from gunshot wounds, according to ABC7. Despite life-saving efforts at the scene, the victim, a 48-year-old Camarillo resident, was pronounced dead.
Investigators said the shooting did not appear to be random. The suspect and victim were believed to have known each other, though authorities have not publicly disclosed the nature of their relationship. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office took the lead on the homicide investigation, and detectives identified a vehicle believed to belong to the suspect, according to KTLA.
A 100 mph pursuit across two counties
When deputies located the suspect’s vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, the driver refused to pull over and accelerated, triggering a pursuit that quickly escalated to dangerous speeds. The chase moved from Camarillo onto the 101 Freeway and then the 405 Freeway, with speeds reaching approximately 100 mph, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office as reported by ABC7.
Aerial footage from news helicopters showed the suspect weaving between lanes and at times driving on the shoulder to avoid slower traffic. At one point the pursuit passed through La Crescenta near the 210 Freeway before the suspect doubled back toward the South Bay, pulling patrol units from multiple agencies into the effort to box him in.
No bystander injuries were reported during the chase, but the pursuit forced drivers on some of the region’s busiest corridors to share the road with a fleeing homicide suspect and a trailing convoy of marked units.
Standoff on a freeway ramp near LAX
The pursuit ended when the suspect exited the freeway in Westchester, near Los Angeles International Airport, and came to a stop on a ramp. Within minutes, law enforcement vehicles from several agencies had the car surrounded, according to KTLA.
Deputies treated the situation as a barricade and kept their distance. Loudspeakers were used to call on the driver to surrender. Nearby freeway lanes were shut down, and traffic backed up as the standoff played out within sight of airport-bound commuters.
Tactical units and armored vehicles moved into position while negotiators attempted to make contact with the suspect, according to ABC7’s account of the incident.
Suspect found dead from self-inflicted gunshot wound
After a prolonged standoff, deputies approached the vehicle and found the suspect dead inside from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office said. The man’s identity has not been publicly released as of late March 2026, and authorities have not confirmed whether next-of-kin notification played a role in the delay.
The suspect’s death means the homicide case will never go to trial. For the victim’s family, there will be no courtroom proceeding, no cross-examination, and no public verdict. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office has said the investigation remains active as detectives work to establish a complete timeline and motive, according to People.
